I liked the idea of making Snow Play Dough, but I knew it had to be white and not the usual “dough color.” A previous recipe did not work, but with a few changes, we now have a recipe for Snow Play Dough.

Enjoy conversations about snow even when you don’t have snow on the ground. Remind children that the Bible says God sends the snow (Psalm 147:16).

Snow Play Dough

Basic Play Dough Recipe:

1 cup flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 tablespoon white powdered tempera

1 tablespoons cooking oil

1/2 cup salt

1 cup water

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and white powdered tempera together. Mix

the cooking oil in the water and add to the dry ingredients. Stir with wooden

spoon and pour mixture in a nonstick pan. (Ingredients may be mixed in the pan.)

Stir constantly until dough pulls away from the sides of pan. This process takes

about 3 minutes. Empty dough onto waxed paper. Knead until smooth and cool.

Store in a zip-lock bag.

Teaching Tips:

  • Talk to a child about making “snow balls” or a snowman.
  • Guide a child to name favorite things to do in the winter.
  • Give copies of the recipe to parents to encourage parents to make and use play dough at home.
  • Consider making play dough for a home visit to an absentee or prospect.
