Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16

Opening Question to Discuss:  Have you ever eaten something that really needed salt? Name some things that would be terribly bland to eat without salt. (Ex:  Green beans, potatoes, popcorn.)  Salt was used to preserve foods and keep them from spoiling in bible times.

First Point:

“You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt should lose it’s taste,  how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.” Matthew 5:13

Salt mixes in with the food and the flavor goes all throughout the dish.  Salt also keeps foods from spoiling.  God put us here on earth to be the “salt” or the “flavor”.

What do you think that means?  Are we all the same “flavor”,  or has God given us each special flavors, talents, and abilities? Name some talents and abilities God has given you.

Second Point:

“You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16.

We are to be Jesus’ light to the world.  We should bravely tell others about Him.  By doing good works for others, we show them that we love and obey Jesus and want them to know him too!

Is it easy to do bad things or wrong things in the light? Why? Would it be easier or harder to sin if someone is shining a bright light on you? Why?

Third Point:

Now that you know that Jesus wants you to be salt and light,  think of some ways you can BE the salt and the light to others?

List  ways that you can minister to others during the upcoming holiday season.
