Create: Birthday Cards for the Homeless

A local downtown mission establishment that works with the homeless told us recently that they have a birthday party each week for their clients.  They have a cake, sing “happy birthday” and wish each client a happy birthday by name.  Many of the clients do not have a supportive family system, and would otherwise have a very lonely birthday.  Here’s a great idea for your class to do to bring some cheer to the homeless community in your city!  This could also be used for nursing homes, or even delivering to elderly shut-ins in your church.

Gather

  • 8 ½ x 11 cardstock (fold in half)
  • A9 sized envelopes (available at WalMart in bright colors)
  • markers
  • stickers
  • scissors that cut a fancy edge (optional)

Make several examples of cards to start their imaginations rolling.  Give them several simple bible verses that can be written in the cards, along with simple phrases such as “We hope your day is wonderful!” “Have a great birthday!” etc.  If you want to get fancy you can cut the front outside edge off the card so that the back side is slightly bigger and shows.  Run a marker down the straight uncut inside of the card so that the colored stripe shows at the edge of the fancy cut.

Check the cards before you send them.  I had to remove one that said, “Happy Birthday you homeless person! I hope you find a family soon!”
