With autumn just around the corner, I want to give you an idea submitted by Sarah Sorenson. Create a family prayer tree where kids can glue leaves onto tree art that includes names of family members. Art can be displayed in the child’s home or bedroom as a reminder to pray for each and every family member. You can make this tree with leaves of spring or fall colors. We chose orange leaves and then added a fun twist with marble painting. Another good option might include real leaves the teacher has gathered and talked about during the September unit about God’s Creation.

Gather:

  • Leaves (real or construction paper)
  • Brown paper
  • White or blue background paper
  • Permanent marker
  • Glue
Painting Option:

  • Marbles
  • Muffin pan or small cups
  • Different colors of paint
  • Disposable fork or spoon
  • Tape
  • Copy paper box lid or flat pan with edges

Create:

Give each child a background sheet of paper and tree truck to glue on the background. Invite the kids to write the names of family members on each leaf (or tell you the names for you to write on the leaf). Then glue the leaf to the tree.

Marble Painting option:

Invite the children to take turns painting with the marbles. Allow them to drop a marble into the small amount of paint and move it around in the muffin pan. Carefully lift it over to the box lid where the leaves are taped down and roll around the marble around to create painted designs across the leaves. Remove to dry. Later add the family names and glue to the prayer tree.
