THE BIG IDEA:

Teachers enjoy finding ways to recycle household items. The plastic scoops in laundry detergent boxes can be used to make shakers. Boys an girls will enjoy using the shakers for instruments.

God gives us ears to hear (Proverbs 20:12).

THINGS TO GATHER:

Supplies for Shakers:

  • 2 plastic scoops (from laundry detergent boxes)
  • clearing mailing tape
  • fillers such as aquarium gravel, beans, popcorn, or small rocks

PUTTING IT TOGETHER:
  1. Clean the plastic scoops.
  2. Choose a filler to place in one of the scoops.
  3. Place the other scoop upside down on top of the filled scoop.
  4. Use clear mailing tape to secure the two scoops, keeping the handles together with the tape.
  5. Make several shakers and vary the fillers in each one.

Teaching Tips for Nature Center:

Use one of the shakers in the nature center to talk about sounds. Ask children to decide if the sound is quiet or loud. Guide children to talk about sounds they like to hear.
