Shop for seed packages to use in your preschool classroom. You can find a variety of inexpensive seed packages at dollar stores (25 cents each). The seed packages provide colorful pictures of flowers and food items.
Buy duplicate sets of seed packages to create matching games and extra activities.

Preparation of Seed Packages for Activities:
- Gather a variety of seed packages— flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
- Carefully open each package. Remove the seed and pour into a small plastic bag. Label the bag with the name of the seed.
- Laminate the empty seed packages.
- If you do not want to plant the seeds as a classroom activity, give the seeds to a parent to use at home. Ask the parent to take pictures of the seeds as they grow and bring the pictures to show the boys and girls in the classroom.
Concentration Game:
- Choose two of each kind of seed. Spread the packages facedown on the table or floor. Choose a child to turn over two packages. If they match, leave the packages face up. If they do not match, turn the packages facedown. Continue until packages are matched.
- Explore different ways to play concentration games with preschoolers.
- The seed packages can be placed behind pieces of construction paper in zip-lock bags. Number the bags to allow a child to call two numbers then turn the bags over to see if the packages match.
- If different colors are placed in the bags, a child can call two colors; turn over the bags, and see if the packages match.
Matching Game:
Mix the seed packages together in a basket or box. Ask the children to find the matching packages.
Sorting Game:
Encourage boys and girls to sort the seed packages by colors. They can also sort into two categories: things to eat and things not to eat.
Teaching Tips:
- Consider other ways to use the empty seed packages:
- Use the seed packages in the homeliving/dramatic play center to talk about foods to eat. Consider serving samples of some of the food items. (Remember to post an allergy chart to notify parents of food that is served in the room.)
- The seed packages can be used in the block center to “build a garden.”
- Place the seed packages in the nature center to talk about things that grow.
- Make a book with empty seed packages. Punch a hole in the corner of each package; attach the packages together with a metal ring.
